How To Resize Windows Recovery Partition

Scenario

You attempt to Move/Resize System Reserved partition in HDM, but the operation cannot be completed

Note: the latest Paragon Hard Disk Manager 17/18 versions allow operations with Windows Recovery partitions.

Reason

Hard Disk Manager has built-in restriction to disallow Write operations on crucial partitions, such as OEM/Vendor volumes and System Reserved/Recovery.

Solution

Note: This process is advanced and assumes basic knowledge of command prompt,
DISKPART, and partition resizing. If unable to complete the necessary steps using the
guide below, please reach out to support for additional assistance.

1. Back up the existing Recovery partition
2. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run DISKPART
3. Use “list disk” to identify the correct disk and select it using “select disk”
4. Once the disk is selected, use “list part” and select the “Recovery” partition
   
5. Type “detail part”
6. Note the highlighted “Type” value and save it into Notepad, either copying directly from
   command prompt or the text below:
   de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
   
7. Note the highlighted “Attrib” value and save it into Notepad, either copying directly
   from command prompt or the text below:
   0X8000000000000001
   
8. With the partition still selected, paste:
   set id=ebd0a0a2-b9e5-4433-87c0-68b6b72699c7
   This will make it so that it is a basic data partition rather than a protected recovery partition
9. With the partition still selected, paste:
   gpt attributes=0X8000000000000000
   This will make it so you’re able to move the physical partition.
10. Now type “detail part” again to ensure the ID and attributes you just set are reflected.
    
11. Resize the partition to the desired size (i.e. using Hard Disk Manager). If you need to
    shrink the C drive to expand the Recovery partition and C is encrypted with Bitlocker,
    please use Windows Disk Management to shrink the partition, then use Hard Disk
    Manager to expand the Recovery Partition. Alternatively, decrypt the volume and you’ll
    be able to use Hard Disk Manager. It can optionally be re-encrypted after resizing.
12. Once complete, set the values back to what they originally were in DISKPART for the
    recovery partition:
    set id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
    then
    gpt attributes=0X8000000000000001
13. Everything should now be set and the recovery partition should still be functional, but
    you can confirm by exiting DISKPART and running the following command:
    reagent /info
    
    If it’s disabled, you can use DISKPART to assign a temporary drive letter to your Recovery
    partition, then run:
    reagentc /setreimage /path r:\Recovery\WindowsRE – where “R:” is the volume letter
    you assigned to the Recovery partition.
    Once complete, you can remove the drive letter with DISKPART and the recovery partition
    will still function.
