Error message “The network is not present or not started.”

Scenario: When booting into the WinPE environment you get the error message “The network is not present or not started.”

Error message "The network is not present or not started."

On start of the rescue environment it scans for a Network Interface Card (NIC). If none is found, or if the WinPE environment does not offer an appropriate driver for the existing NIC the error message “The network is not present or not started” will be displayed.

The error message will appear as well when you click on “Setup Network”.

When the error message is closed by clicking on “Cancel” the system will continue to work smoothly.

While the WinPE environment supports a lot of NICs the error message is quite uncommon.

If you happen to get this error message you can avoid it by implementing the appropriate driver for your NIC during the creation of the WinPE. Please refer to the article “How to add drivers to recovery media“.
